Fixed Location

OK, so I'm not the most regular blogger in the world. Anyway, it's time to think about where Fix should meet. We've been meeting in the foyer of the school for the last 3 weeks and will have the chapter house available for next week, the question is: do we want to move back? Here are some thoughts about pros and cons for the Chapter House (hereafter CH) and the Foyer.

Pros for CH
More space, easier sound setup, closer to kitchen, no distractions from outside, carpet helps homely feel and helps people hang longer after church,

Cons for CH
Harder to find, feel dwarfed in a large space, singing gets lost in large space,

Pros for Foyer
Smaller space means it feels 'fuller', singing sounds better, it looks new and classy, it's visible for people walking by to drop in and easy for them to see what's happening, by standing outside beforehand we create a buzz in the square,

Cons for Foyer
Sound setup more complex, can be distracted by outside happenings, more setup work, less homely setting so people less likely to stay for longer (though last time 4/5 stayed more than an hour)

Not all these points carry equal weight, some are far more significant than others. Also, some of us love change, others of us hate change.

There are probably many more points that could be made, why don't you make them? Any thoughts? Click on the comments link below, leave a comment and let's think about this!!!

Hey.
I love the new space. I love the way the people hang outside before church and create a crowd.

I think that its great that people can see us (like we are in a massive fish bowl). I think this is a great non-threatening way of witnessing to people that Jesus is Lord.

I like the open, cleaner and brighter feel of the foyer. I think it creates more energy in the place.

And lastly I love the real piano!

Ok, Caio!

I agree with Justin, I love the new space. My biggest "con" would be the cold- especially moving into winter. I see that we can't lock the automatic doors shut, because people wont be able to get in, but with them locked open- the air that comes straight in is COLD!!!

I love the new space too I think it is a great way for people in the square to see us and know we are happening!
one con is that silly st Andrews promo screen can be really distracting!
does air con also produce warm heat 2 for winter?? that heater may be a small solution to the coldness!?
also do you think people are more likely or less likely to stay around here or the chapter house??
I heard it said that it is less homely then the chapter house???
some thoughts!
love and prayers

Well I am also a fan of the new space. Each week have I watched people walk in during the service that probably wouldn't have if we were in the chapter house.

I think that if we stay in the foyer we would need to find some bathrooms to use that are in the building - as we hit winter it will be hard to keep going over to the cathedral - rain, cold, dark...

Also it is hard for people doing dinner to feel part of the service. So maybe we need to simplify dinner or find a kitchen we can use in the same building.

It was great how people went to ice aand slice after church on sunday - there was about 15 of us there. So maybe we can be encouraging that sort of get together after church.

So I am voting for stay in the foyer then we could be FIX in the FOYER!

I too am a fan of the new space. I think it's a refreshing change to the chapter house. It's bright and modern and even though it may be cold in winter, it definitely has a more 'warm' feel to it than the chapter house.

That said I don't mind going back to the Chapter House once in a while.

I really like the foyer.

Obviously there are cons but I think if we can work these out it's a great opportunity.

I see the biggest problem being doors. In winter it's too cold to leave them open, but we can't lock them closed either - that would be weird to be locked in. So I suggest we try not seating ppl in the sensor zone. If that doesn't work, move back in CH.

Re: dinner. I guess from my point of view I always feel disconnected from the service when I'm on dinner, so I don't really think the location change makes a huge difference. But if others feel differently please say so.

Can I add to the 'pros' - no creepy paintings. And I actually feel more like sticking around afterwards coz there are nice modern comfy lounges all round the periphery.

yeah I'm keen on it. It feels contemporary . . I realise that's a little obvious. pretty much any building is contemporary compared to the chapter house . . . but there's something about that sparkly white floor that makes me feel like I'm somewhere hip and new . . . which possibly is more significant for Fix than churches built for other demographics . .

Interesting comments people !!! I'm sure if we miss those creepy paintings with the eyes that follow you round (they do!) we could get copies put up.

We could definitely get the tvs turned off and I'm pretty sure the air-con is reverse cycle. Doug's comment about getting out of the flight path of the doors might work. It does feel bright and modern doesn't it? Also, as pointed out by a couple of us, it's really accessible and open which is great for people coming through the square to check us out.
